Staying hydrated through a Cairo summer
4 min read
In temperatures above 35°C an adult can lose more than a litre of fluid an hour outdoors. Water replaces the volume but not the sodium and potassium lost in sweat, which is why headaches and cramps continue after drinking. Keep an oral rehydration sachet at home and mix it with the full amount of clean water printed on the packet — halving the water makes the solution too concentrated. Children, elderly relatives and anyone on diuretics dehydrate faster; if there is vomiting, confusion or no urine for eight hours, stop self-treating and see a doctor.
